Design Philosophy
When we were first approached for this project, we heard that the aim was to blur the boundary between offcuts and finished products, and to create an approach that inspires new perspectives. To respond to this direction, we explored several approaches to create objects that could serve as opportunities to rediscover the value of Aji stone. One of them began when we actually saw the offcuts from the Aji stone manufacturing process. We were drawn to their curious presence ̶ where naturally formed shapes coexist with artificial yet unintentional ones. Following that impression, we traced those contours with lines, engraving as if to resaw the stone anew from the discarded fragments. Another approach focused on the weight of the stone. Each piece is engraved with a mark indicating its weight. A ji st one, when finely processed, becomes highly valuable ̶ yet once it becomes an offcut, it loses that value. By taking “weight” as a clue, we sought to reconsider the very nature of value itself. Through engaging with the offcuts ̶ whether seemingly usable or not ̶ we created a bout fifty graphic pieces. Each of t hese forms, born from that process, reflects the rich possibilities that lie between offcuts and finished products. We hope they bring small, new points of connection into everyday life.
